- Metaverse is one of Facebook's ambitious projects. However, the project, which has spent more than US$60 billion or Rp. 998 trillion since 2020, is now abandoned.

The company, which is now under the Meta umbrella, actually has a big vision for its project. Metaverse created from virtual worlds is created to connect each other and expand the market for devices.

However, the latest report states that Meta will cut the project's budget. The amount reaches 30% for the 2026 budget plan, said a Bloomberg News report, quoted by Reuters, Wednesday (10/12/2025).

The same report revealed budget cuts likely include layoffs. It is possible that employee cuts will be made as early as January 2026

Meta did not immediately respond to a request for comment on this matter.

Meta's metaverse project is housed in Reality Labs. For information, this unit also produces Quest mixed-reality headsets, Ray-Ban and augmented-reality glasses in the future.

Reuters wrote that the report on metaverse budget cuts comes as Meta seeks to remain relevant in the AI competition. It is known that the company's Llama 4 model was also not well received.

Meta has set capital expenditure of US$72 billion (Rp. 1,198 trillion) this year. In total, it is estimated that the owner of Instagram will spend US$400 billion (Rp. 6,600 trillion) on AI throughout 2025.

Specifically for AI projects, Meta places them in Superintelligence Labs. Mark Zuckerberg, the boss of the technology giant, is directly involved in the project and leads the acquisition of talent to enter his company.

It is reported that Zuckerberg directly offered the talents he was targeting, including to a number of startups. He offered a million dollar salary package to get the desired people interested in joining Meta.
