Teuku Markam is a rich merchant from Aceh who is known as the main contributor of gold to the flames of the National Monument (Monas).

- Gold Donation
Of the total 35 kg of gold that covered the top of Monas at the start of its construction, Teuku Markam donated 28 kg. Currently, the total gold in Monas has reached 72 kg after several additions and renovations. 

- Background
Born in Seuneudon, North Aceh in 1925, he was of noble descent (Uleebalang) who had a career in the military as an aide to General Gatot Soebroto before turning to become a successful businessman. 

- Economic Role
Through his company, PT Markam, he became one of the richest people in the era of President Soekarno and funded various national strategic projects, including the liberation of West Irian. 

- Imprisonment 9 Years
In the early days of the New Order (1966), he was imprisoned without trial for 9 years because he was accused of being involved in the PKI and his assets were confiscated by the state. His company assets later became the forerunner of the BUMN PT Berdikari (Persero). 

-End of Life
After his release in 1974, he tried to make a comeback in the business world but never regained his former fortune. Teuku Markam died in 1985.
