The Story of the Noble Marriage of Rasulullah ﷺ with Khadijah رضي الله عنها
In the midst of ignorant Arab society which views marriage only as a worldly attribute, Allah ﷻ prepared a grand wedding which would later become the basis for the preaching of Islam. The marriage was a marriage between the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and Khadijah bint Khuwailid رضي الله عنها, a sacred bond filled with love, loyalty and blessings.
Khadijah رضي الله عنها was a noble, respected and wealthy woman in Mecca. He is known as a successful trader with good morals. Many prominent Quraysh men proposed to her, but she rejected all of them. Until one day, he heard about an honest young man named Muhammad ﷺ, known by the title Al-Amin.
Khadijah رضي الله عنها entrusted her trading treasures to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to be taken to trade in the land of Syria. This decision was not without reason, because he had heard his honesty and trustworthiness from many people. On that trip, Rasulullah ﷺ brought much greater profits than usual, but what was more valuable was the report about his noble morals which was conveyed by Maysarah, Khadijah's servant.
Maysarah tells how the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was always honest in transactions, did not cheat, did not raise prices unjustly, and always maintained his own honor. Hearing this, Khadijah رضي الله عنها's heart became even more convinced that Muhammad ﷺ was not an ordinary man.
With great honor, Khadijah رضي الله عنها conveyed her desire to marry through the intermediary of her friend, Nafisah bint Munyah. When this reached Rasulullah ﷺ, he greeted him with courtesy and asked his uncle, Abu Talib, for his opinion.
Finally, a blessed marriage was carried out. Rasulullah ﷺ was 25 years old at that time, while Khadijah رضي الله عنها was 40 years old. The wedding dowry was given with full sincerity, and the marriage contract was led by Abu Talib with a sermon full of glory.
This marriage is not only a bond of love, but also a bond of struggle. Khadijah رضي الله عنها became the first wife of the Prophet ﷺ and the first woman to believe in the message of Islam. He was the comforter of Rasulullah ﷺ when the first revelation came down in Hira Cave. When Rasulullah ﷺ came home shaking, Khadijah رضي الله عنها said with full confidence:
“By Allah, Allah will not insult you forever.
You maintain relationships, speak the truth, help the weak, honor guests, and help people who are in trouble."
All of Khadijah رضي الله عنها's wealth, energy and soul fought for Islam. He accompanied Rasulullah ﷺ in difficult times of preaching, the Quraish boycott, and heavy pressure. His loyalty never wavered until the end of his life.
Rasulullah ﷺ also really loved Khadijah رضي الله عنها. Even after her death, he often mentioned her name with longing and glorification of Khadijah's friends. He said:
“He gave me sleep when others denied me, he allowed me when others lied to me, and he helped me with his wealth when others held me back.”
(HR. Ahmad)
The story of the marriage of the Prophet ﷺ and Khadijah رضي الله عنها teaches that a marriage built on faith, morals and sincerity will give birth to great strength. From this simple house, the light of Islam began to shine throughout the world.
